Graduate Program in Allied Health, Program of Study
Students are able to develop individualized plans of study in conjunction with their major advisor and advisory committee to meet their professional, educational, and scholarly goals. These plans include the following required components:
1. Health Promotion (12 credits): Four courses in health promotion are encouraged to assist the student in achieving their professional, educational, and scholarly goals. This menu of GPAH courses includes GPAH 324 (Critical Issues in Health Promotion), GPAH 319 (Allied Health Education), GPAH 305 (Program Evaluation), GPAH 309 (Health & Aging /Health Across the Lifespan), and GPAH 331 (Nutrition for Healthy Communities).
2. Research (9 credits): Students are expected to complete GPAH 306 (Research Methods) and two additional statistics courses. The three courses selected to fulfill this category will equip the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully complete their master’s thesis.
3. Electives: Students have the option of selecting one or more electives from courses offered in the GPAH or in other schools or colleges across campus. Electives such as GPAH 303 (Health Care Policy) and GPAH 360 (Cross Cultural Health Care) complement the core courses in the GPAH plan of study.
4. Thesis (9 credits): Nine credits of thesis work are required. It is here that the student utilizes problem solving and the scientific method of inquiry to complete a research project in health promotion.
Plan A (Thesis Option) or Plan B (Course Option):
Students in the GPAH are encouraged to pursue the Plan A (Thesis) option as described above. Students in this option are responsible for a minimum of 21 credits of advanced course work and the completion of a 9 credit research project. The Plan B option is available. Plan B students are responsible for a minimum of 24 credits of advanced course work and completion of 8 credits of applied scholarly work (project or practicum).
Masters degree research projects span a wide range of interests. We encourage you to visit GPAH faculty website to gain more information regarding possible research topics.
