Masters Program - Graduate Program in Allied Health (GPAH)

The research experience advances health promotion science through culminating projects and dissemination of new knowledge in scientific meetings and publications. Graduates of our Program are employed in leadership, research, and clinical positions in public health, health care, worksite and research settings.  

Program of study:

The Master’s degree in the Graduate Program in Allied Health (GPAH) may be earned under either of two plans, as determined by the advisory committee. 

Plan A (Thesis Tract *) emphasizes research and requires not fewer than 24 credits of advanced course work and completion of a Master’s thesis.

Masters degree research projects span a wide range of interests. We encourage you to visit GPAH faculty website to gain more information regarding possible research topics. 

Plan B   (Project and Practicum Tract *) requires a “comprehensive understanding of subject matter,” not fewer than 26 credits of advanced course work and completion of a project and a practicum. 

Students in both Plans must assemble a graduate advisory committee in conjunction with their major advisor to develop the Plan of Study and the research agenda or the project/practicum. 

Typical Plans of Study, including core courses, are provided below.  

    • GPAH 6324, GPAH 6305, GPAH 5319, and GPAH 5309 are Core Health Promotion and Allied Health Sciences electives.  Advisory committees may require more than the minimum number of credits and may make substitutions for the course requirements listed above.

Graduate certificate in health education and health promotion:

The Graduate Program in Allied Health is offering a Graduate Certificate in Health Promotion and Health Education (CHPHE). Completion of core competencies in CHPHE may allow students to be eligible to sit for certification as a Certified Health Educator Specialist (CHES). For more information regarding the certificate, please contact the Program Director. 

Scheduling and Facilities:

To accommodate working professionals, courses are offered in the late afternoon and evening at the Storrs, main campus.  The program may be pursued either full or part time.

Library facilities and services are extensive and include a modern library on the Storrs campus, the L.M. Stowe Library at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington as well as specialized libraries on the Storrs campus.
